Southampton vs Newcastle postponed as second weekend Premier League game called off

1 min read

Southampton’s game against Newcastle has been postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak and a mounting injury list at the away side.

Newcastle had their game against Everton called off earlier in the week due to the same issue.

It is understood Southampton are not happy that the game has been postponed and have let their feelings be known.

Eddie Howe’s side managed a 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Monday night but during that game Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser all suffered injuries. Javier Manquillo also picked up a one-game ban.

Their midfielder Isaac Hayden is now out for the foreseeable future after having knee surgery.

Before Monday’s game, Newcastle suffered a significant COVID-19 outbreak which led to a number of first-team players missing out.

Newcastle, who are 19th in the Premier League, next face Cambridge United in the FA Cup on January 8. Southampton, meanwhile, will take on Swansea City in the third round of the competition on the same day.
