Jamie Vardy out for up to four weeks in latest blow for Leicester

2 min read

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Jamie Vardy could be out of action for up to a month after suffering a hamstring injury during Leicester City’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

Vardy pulled up in the second half but as the Foxes had already used all three substitutes he was forced to soldiered on until full time.

The injury blow is the latest in a long line of setbacks that Leicester have had to deal with this season. Heading into the Liverpool match they were without nine first-team players, with both starting centre-backs Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans sidelined.

This meant Rodgers was forced to field Daniel Amartey and Wilfred Ndidi in defence against the high-flying Reds. This, combined with the fact that most of the rest of the starting XI had played just over 48 hours previously, made the victory nothing short of miraculous.

However, the feel-good factor around the club has not lasted long with Rodgers confirming that Vardy had become the latest player to pick up a knock.

“Jamie will be out for the weekend and James Maddison [also injured against Liverpool] should be fine,” he told the press. “Could be the next 3-4 weeks [for Vardy].”

In better news, Rodgers confirmed that Harvey Barnes is back in training, while Ryan Bertrand is expected to return next week. Long-term injury concerns James Justin and Wesley Fofana are nearing comebacks as well.

With Leicester’s squad decimated by injuries, Rodgers once again called for the Premier League to allow its teams to make five substitutions – as is permitted in the rest of Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues.

“Yeah, 100%,” Rodgers said, when asked if we would favour the rule change.

“I think that, for me, the possibility to do that would really help to change things. Five subs definitely would help.

He added: “We’ll not get too bogged down on it or use injuries as excuses. We had a great win the other night but now we have to pick it up on Saturday.

“And they will do. They’re great guys. That focus and concentration is very important, particularly in this period. We’ve at least got a couple of days and we’ll do our final preparation for tomorrow. The players who are available will be good enough.”
