Lionel Messi has heaped praise on Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez, as he believes he is “one of the best goalkeepers in the world”.
Martinez broke into the Arsenal team in 2019/20 as he played 23 times for them that season.
With the Gunners opting to keep Bernd Leno as their number one, Martinez left last year as Aston Villa bought him for around £20m.
The 29-year-old played all 38 of Villa’s Premier League games last season as he was one of the standout keepers in the division.
Martinez made his senior debut for Argentina in June. He has been able to establish himself as their number one keeper as he has now been capped eleven times.
Back in July, Messi described Martinez as a “phenomenon”:
“We have Emi, who is a phenomenon, we trusted him. We achieved the goal of being able to play all the games.”
Martinez kept a clean sheet as Argentina beat Uraguay 3-0 in their latest World Cup qualifier over the weekend.
After that game, Messi told TNT Sports that he thinks the Villa shot-stopper is one of the best keepers in the world:
“Dibu [Emiliano] Martinez is fundamental,’ said Messi.
“When they come to him, he always responds.
“He established himself in goal and we have one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”
