It’s official. Manchester United and Real Madrid have completed the transfer of French center-back Raphael Varane, who leaves the club after 10 seasons. While the fee hasn’t been disclosed, reports from England and Spain indicate that United will pay around €50 million.
Varane was set to become a free agent in the summer of 2022 after he had refused to sign an extension with Real Madrid. The defender was keen on trying a new challenge and Madrid weren’t offering the salary he wanted, so Los Blancos ultimately had to sell him if they didn’t want to lose him for free in just 12 months.
Varane leaves the club as one of the most successful defenders in recent history. He’s won three league titles, four Champions Leagues, three European Supercups and four FIFA Club World Cups.
Madrid have let go their two undisputed starters at the center-back spot in Sergio Ramos and Varane, so it’s now a new era and time for players like Eder Militao and David Alaba to prove their worth.
