Bruno Fernandes has been crowned Manchester United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the second successive season.
The Portuguese midfielder lifted the trophy, presented by @adidasfootball, in his first campaign, despite only joining in January 2020, and has followed it up with the top individual prize again for 2020/21 after fans voted in huge numbers.
Indeed, supporters based in over 200 different countries had their say on the outcome so thank you to everybody who contributed.
Fernandes has enjoyed another remarkable campaign, scoring 18 times in 36 Premier League starts, claiming nine goals in Europe (Champions League and Europa League) and not forgetting his masterful free-kick winner against Liverpool in the Emirates FA Cup.
He has contributed 11 assists in the Premier League and a further five in Europe and tops many charts for the most creative and productive midfielder around, beating Frank Lampard’s goal record for a midfielder in the Premier League era with his latest strike against Liverpool.
The 26-year-old is the Reds’ leading scorer and donned the captain’s armband in Harry Maguire’s absence for the match with Liverpool last week. There is no disputing his huge influence nor that he is a worthy recipient of the honour.
The classy playmaker was Player of the Month in November and December, and was also nominated in October and February.
Furthermore, he has been voted Man of the Match on 12 occasions with Edinson Cavani the next-best on five.
Luke Shaw and Cavani emerged as the main rivals for the prize after also enjoying superb seasons in the red shirt. In the end, however, Bruno was a very convincing victor with 63 per cent of the votes cast. Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford finished in fourth and fifth respectively.
It was much closer last term when Fernandes pipped Anthony Martial by only 1.5 per cent.
We’re delighted to announce that Bruno Fernandes has won Manchester United’s Goal of the Season award for 2020/21.The Portuguese playmaker has found the net 28 times so far this term, which is a record for a Premier League midfielder in a single campaign across all competitions, beating Frank Lampard’s mark of 27 set in 2010.It’s fair to say there have been some spectacular strikes included in that tally, with Fernandes’s goals against Everton, Istanbul Basaksehir, Newcastle, Roma and West Brom included in the 20-strong shortlist, which was released last Tuesday. After almost a week of voting, however, we have a clear winner: the 26-year-old’s astonishing effort against the Toffees during the exciting 3-3 draw at Old Trafford in February this year.
With United a goal up at the time, Fernandes received the ball from Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right, in a position seemingly ripe for crossing into the box – Edinson Cavani had scored our opener and looked typically alert with his movement as Bruno controlled the pass.Taking a touch to set himself, the former Sporting man noticed that Everton midfielder Tom Davies had pre-emptively gone to block the cross, leaving a modicum of space for him to whip the ball over Ben Godfrey and the stretching Robin Olsen and into the back of the net. Sublime!
Unsurprisingly, it was the winner of our Goal of the Month award for February, but it was also adjudged to be the best scored during the month across the Premier League. Now it has received the ultimate recognition from United supporters, completing an end-of-term awards double for Fernandes in the process. It was revealed earlier today that the Portuguese playmaker has been crowned the club’s Player of the Year – also voted for by United supporters – for a second consecutive campaign.
He now becomes the first Red since Robin van Persie, back in 2013, to hold both the annual Player and Goal accolades at the same time. Well done, Bruno!
Fernandes also came second in the voting, with his breakaway strike at Newcastle a very different type of goal to the Everton effort.
Two efforts from Paul Pogba and an Edinson Cavani header rounded out your top five…
