Copa America to go ahead with 10 teams

1 min read

This year’s Copa America will go ahead with only 10 teams, organisers say, abandoning plans to replace Australia and Qatar.

The Socceroos and Qatar withdrew from the South American tournament last month after the pandemic forced changes that created clashes with 2022 World Cup qualifying schedules.

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) says it invited other nations but challenges brought about by the pandemic stopped them from participating.

The organising body released the fixture for the tournament on Tuesday, with the opening match between Argentina and Chile to kick off in Buenos Aires on June 13.

Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Argentina play in a southern group, and Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Colombia play in the northern section.

The top four teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals, and the final will take place in the Colombian city of Barranquilla on July 10.
