Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says his team showed ‘intelligence and resilience’ in their 3-1 victory over Southampton.
Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette all scored as the Gunners avenged their recent FA Cup loss to the Saints.
The victory means Arteta’s men move up to eighth in the Premier League, ahead of Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Southampton, meanwhile, have slipped down to 11th following a poor run of results.
Speaking to BT Sport (via BBC Sport) after the win, Arteta said: “I think we were good from the start. We conceded a goal from a corner but responded straight away. We were good on the ball.
“We got out of trouble and made some big chances. Our pressing was brilliant. We were good in the break. It was a strong performance.
“It is tough to win here. They are strong and have been in form. It showed a lot of intelligent and resilience from the team in the way they managed the game.
“We have still a lot to do. We have to improve, be humble and train good for the next game.”
When asked about the performance of Pepe, Arteta said: “He was really good again. He created big moments. He deserved his chance today and he took it.”
Bukayo Saka played a starring role in the win, scoring one for himself and assisting Lacazette for the third goal. Speaking about Saka, Arteta continued: “He has been very consistent. He has played in different positions and adapted. He is assisting players. It was another strong performance today.”
The Gunners have turned their fortunes around after a disappointing start to the season. They now look ready to fight for a European spot.
