Son and Kane combines again to gun down Arsenal

2 min read

Heung-min Son and Harry Kane were at their brilliant best as Tottenham beat Arsenal 2-0 in Sunday’s north London derby to retake top spot in the Premier League.

Spurs fans were allowed back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time since March following the government’s easing of Covid-19 restrictions, and were treated to a fine performance from Jose Mourinho’s men.

Son opened the scoring for Spurs off yet another Harry Kane assist, though the goal was all about the South Korean as he broke from halfway, cut inside and bent a glorious effort into the top left-hand corner of Bernd Leno’s net 13 minutes into the derby.

Arsenal were struggling to create chances, and the match swung further in Spurs’ favour on the stroke of half-time.

Son turned provider this time around, cutting the ball into the path of Kane on the overlap before the Spurs striker lashed the ball in off the bar at the near post in first-half injury time.

Thomas Partey – recently out with a thigh injury – had been a surprise inclusion from Mikel Arteta, but the £45million summer signing was forced off straight after Kane’s goal in a further blow for the Gunners.

Arsenal pressed for a way back into the game after the break, with an Alexandre Lacazette header forcing Hugo Lloris to shovel the ball wide of his right-hand post with 23 minutes left on the clock.

But that chance aside, Arsenal again looked short of ideas in attack as they slumped to their sixth defeat in just 11 League games this season.

As for Spurs, the joy of beating their local rivals was perhaps only bettered by the feeling of reclaiming top spot from Chelsea.
